When winter comes around, many of us get the sniffles at least a time or two. In worse scenarios, you may find yourself bedridden with the flu. Physical health is at the forefront of everyone’s minds right now. So how can you stay healthy during the winter months in particular? Here are five tips on how to boost your immune system this season.
Stay Hydrated
There’s a reason staying hydrated is always at the top of health and wellness articles. When you’re hydrated, you feel better and are healthier to tackle the seasonal cold. When you’re dehydrated, you’re bound to feel more sluggish, weak, and even sick. Studies recommend eight glasses of water a day, and if that seems daunting, try starting off your day with a glass of water, as well as with each meal and snack. This is a great way to kick start a hydration habit.
Eat a Healthy Diet
Having a healthy diet focused on fruits and vegetables is a surefire way to boost your immune system, but so is having a balanced diet overall that includes healthy fats and less sweets, caffeine, and processed foods. If you don’t eat meat or have allergies to certain foods, make sure you get the necessary vitamins and proteins through alternative methods like supplements. Talk to your doctor about constructing a healthy diet based on your personal values.
Exercise
Year round, it’s important to exercise to maintain a healthy body, heart, and overall health. There are many reasons why exercise in general keeps you healthy, but here’s just a few. Exercising can increase blood flow, strengthen antibodies, and help reduce stress. Yes, your mental health does play a factor in your physical health, so exercising is a great way to strengthen both your physical and mental health.
Sleep
Sleep is directly tied to your physical and mental health, so why not take care of both by making sure you’re getting enough sleep each night? Recommendations vary based on your age and gender, but at the end of the day, you know how much sleep you need. You know typically how much rest your boy needs to wake up feeling rejuvenated and ready to tackle the day, so set aside the right amount of time to sleep. You won’t regret it.
Get Your Vitamin D
Vitamin D is sometimes called “The Sunshine Vitamin,” which is a fitting name, since it’s produced by the skin’s exposure to sunlight. When the days are shorter and we’re less prone to spending time outdoors, our bodies still need a healthy dose of Vitamin D to maintain strong and healthy bones and boost our immune systems. From a mental health standpoint, sunlight can also be an essential boost to your mood. If the sun doesn’t come out for a few days, consider investing in a sun lamp to get the mental boost you need.
This season, take care of your physical health through discipline, willpower, and knowledge from professionals. Don’t forget to take care of other aspects of your health too, from physical health to mental wellbeing, there are so many aspects of who you are, and they all need attention.. Use this season as an opportunity to show yourself love and care and prepare yourself for whatever your next season of life may be.
