Our beauty regimens should truly be an extension of our regular health routines. Being mindful of what we put into our bodies is just as important as what we do to the outside. When it comes to beauty, it’s easy to fall victim to the latest promising techniques and potions. But following beauty trends can take a negative toll on our skin and our pockets. Instead, take some time to understand your body’s needs, only implementing what would provide you the optimal beauty results without compromising your health. One safe and simple technique to consider is dry brushing.
Although popularized in the last few decades, dry brushing is actually an ancient practice used for centuries across the world to help improve the function of the body’s organisms, with ultimate skin and body rejuvenating benefits.
Dry brushing clears the pores and exfoliates dead skin cells to promote cell renewal and ultimately improving the skin’s appearance. The circulating motions help significantly reduce the appearance of cellulite by plumping the skin to conceal the bumpy, uneven texture.
On a deeper level, it promotes detoxification by stimulating the lymph nodes to cause the body to release waste. Dry brushing also triggers the blood circulatory system to improve circulation and a more effective transport of nutrients and oxygen to the cells in your body. This allows toxins to be flushed out, allowing you to experience an immunity and energy boost.
Effective dry brushing starts with the proper brushes. Shop for brushes with natural fibers made from plant sources. The bristles should be stiff but soft. This is not an abrasive technique; therefore, the bristles should not scratch, damage, or break the skin in any way. Long brushes help with hard-to-reach places, while shorter brushes allow you to target specific areas. If dry brushing your face, shop brushes with even softer bristles, made specifically for the face.
Dry brushing should be done when the skin is completely dry, preferably before a shower. Experts recommend doing this only 1-2 weekly with 3-minute sessions maximum. Start at your ankles, using slightly firm pressure strokes, moving upward towards the heart in long circular motions. Do not over brush to avoid irritation. Over brushing doesn’t speed up the benefits. Take your time to get a rhythm of the repetitive motion to better relax and alleviate stress. Follow your session with a shower or bath. Then apply a moisturizing lotion or oil to finish. Make sure to cleanse your brushes at least twice a month with mild baby shampoo.
As with all new beauty routines, be mindful of the current condition of your skin before starting, especially if it’s broken or sensitive. Do not be afraid to seek professional advice from health and beauty experts. Ask as many questions as needed and shop around for the right tools. If necessary, watch video tutorials uploaded by only accredited experts who can demonstrate the technique properly. When done properly, with the right mindset, dry brushing can be a lasting investment into your health.
