Ever heard the term “fake it ‘til you make it”? It’s been a popular phrase for so long because – even though it seems like it shouldn’t be – it’s really true! People who seem to ooze confidence will tell you that their confidence didn’t come from anything external – not their job, their wealth, or their beauty. Their confidence was something they had to grow and nurture overtime by reminding themselves that their worth is internal – an undeniable fact that isn’t swayed by the reactions of others or the circumstances around them.
So, how do you go about growing this confidence? How do you “fake it ‘til you make it” until that feeling of confidence is natural?
These three tips and tricks will get you started todayon your journey to a more confident self:
Change up your body language.
Our body language is actually a two-way street. If you’ve ever heard the tip to “start smiling first, and then you’ll feel a bit happier,” it’s because our minds can react to our body in the same way our bodies can react to our minds and feelings. So, change your body language from fidgeting and curling in on yourself to standing tall. Lookingconfident will make you feel confident.
Dress the part.
Just like people will say “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have,” confidence can work the same way. How would the most confident version of yourself dress? What clothes always make you feel good and look good on your body? Part of feeling confident in the skin you’re in is to wear pieces that remind you to love yourself.
Switch your tone.
Do you end up in a squeaky high pitch when you speak? You can change that and develop the tone that so many of us associate with confidence. Record yourself first. And while, yes, this might be uncomfortable in the beginning, it will really point out what you can change. Do you speak too quickly? Want to lower down an octave? Taking a deep breath while you’re speaking is the best way to not only keep your body calm and open, but keep your voice in that deeper and warmer tone.
Remember, while having others perceive you as confident is great, you’ll know you’ve found your true confidence when that opinion no longer matters. When you’re confident in yourself, you have the unshakable belief that you can and will achieve your goals. So, get out there fake it ‘til you make it, because you deserve to be confident in yourself!
